In the fast-moving world of agency hustle, being present and focused amidst the buzz can be challenging. That is, we are always anticipating what’s next for our clients. Add in modern-day maladies — social media addictions, sleeping disorders, stress, anxiety, a constant fear of missing out — the list goes on. When distractions like this are plentiful, priorities become blurred, and the pursuit of focus becomes an invaluable art to master.
In 2023, BAM had the extraordinary privilege of learning from Dandapani, a Hindu priest, entrepreneur, and former monk. Insights he shared through monthly sessions with the team left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness, particularly on the transformative nature of focus and purpose. Dandapani emphasized that understanding and embracing one's purpose is a cornerstone for personal and professional success.
“Understanding these two things — your mind and how to focus it — will allow you to begin the process of discovering your life’s purpose, and subsequently defining your priorities and focusing on them, enabling you to live a life of purpose and joy.”
The byproduct? Happiness. Here are some key lessons that resonated deeply with our team.
“Once we know our priorities in life, we know what to focus on and where to direct our finite amount of energy.”
Dandapani urged us to cultivate clarity in our short-term and long-term goals. Like a well-defined roadmap, clear goals and a well-defined purpose allow us to navigate through challenges with unwavering focus. By clearly defining our objectives, we can allocate our time and energy efficiently, avoiding distractions that hinder our progress.
“Where awareness flows, energy goes.”
As a former monk, Dandapani emphasized energy management as a crucial component of focus. Understanding the ebb and flow of our energy throughout the day and drawing parallels between spiritual practices and the corporate world, Dandapani stressed the significance of managing our energy effectively. Recognizing that energy is finite, he encouraged us to invest it in activities that resonate with our purpose. This approach not only enhances productivity but also fosters a sense of fulfillment.
“You can be physically present with someone, but if your awareness is somewhere else, then you are not present. Your energy is now flowing to where your awareness is — not the person you are with.”
Dandapani emphasized the role of mindfulness in aligning ourselves with focus. By being truly present with the people in front of us, we say, “I care about you.” Being present with clients instead of ten steps ahead and fully engaging with our tasks, we can derive greater satisfaction from our work. This mindfulness enhances the quality of our personal relationships and contributes to a positive and collaborative work environment.
“When your purpose defines your priorities, and you are living a life that is focused on your priorities, then you’re living a life that’s in alignment with your purpose.”
Purpose is a compass, guiding us to prioritize tasks aligned with our overarching goals. Dandapani emphasized the importance of discerning between what is essential and what is merely urgent. By aligning our daily activities with our purpose, we can create a meaningful impact in both our personal lives and professional endeavors.
“We need to look at our mind, body, and emotions as tools. We own them. They do not own us.”
Purpose acts as a source of resilience during challenging times. Dandapani shared anecdotes from his own journey, highlighting the importance of perseverance in the face of setbacks. Embracing our purpose gives us the strength to overcome obstacles, fostering a resilient and determined mindset from within.
“What’s consistently in your life is what you’ve been investing energy in. Develop willpower to discipline your life so that you can have more time with what and whom you love. You create your present and future.”
Dandapani's teachings served as a catalyst for our team's introspection and growth. The profound lessons on purpose have inspired us to redefine our professional and personal paths, fostering a sense of meaning and fulfillment in our work and personal lives. As we continue our journey, we are grateful for the wisdom imparted by Dandapani, recognizing that purpose is not just a destination but a guiding force that transforms how we approach our daily endeavors. Drawing from his rich experiences as a former monk, Dandapani underscored the importance of focus, willpower, and discipline; he guided us to explore the depths of our individual and collective purpose. And what more perfect way to wrap the year and segue into BAM’s word of the year for 2024: purpose.
Ramel J. Wallace, Senior Community Manager: “Working towards our happiness goal at BAM, Dandapani emphasized the transformative power of focus. He inspired us to adopt daily focus practices; mine became daily bike rides. This passion led me to join the “Bike the Bay” event. Completing the 24-mile ride over the San Diego Coronado bridge last week was deeply fulfilling. As my focus sharpens, my actions and happiness grow in tandem.”
Brenda Manea, Managing Director: “Prior to meeting with Dandapani, I didn't consider myself to have strong boundaries. One of the many lessons I learned from Dandapani is to treat my own time and energy just like I treat money: as an incredibly valuable and finite commodity. Now, I spend far less time and energy on anxiety-inducing thoughts, fears, and worries, and have the tools I need to bring my awareness back to the present moment to focus on things that are far more positive and productive. I will forever be grateful for the knowledge gifts Dandapani gave us.”
Nichole Mendez, Talent Acquisition Director: “Dandapani’s no-BS approach to life’s journeys was so valuable. The art of discipline is what stood out most to me. You get really good at the things you practice, whether it’s scrolling through Instagram for hours or focusing your attention on being present. But to have focus, we need our personal why (our purpose) cemented in and to know our non-negotiables along the way.”
Back Bamberger, CEO of BAM: "Dandapani was my inspiration, from years ago when I met him, on creating my 100+ year plan. Such a plan narrows and focuses your purpose in life AND clarifies the 'why' of your time on this planet. I knew I had to introduce him to all of our BAMfs, and his presence has made a remarkable difference."
